University of Melbourne, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences

Destravis Group and JLL were engaged by the University of Melbourne to undertake a Space Utilisation Study for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences . The study included the Alan Gilbert Building and the Tri-radiate Medical Building. The aim of the study is to understand the utilisation of the current spaces and the efficiency of their use. ​

The driver for the study was growing demand for more space within the Faculty and the competing needs of research, teaching and administration for space. The option of continually growing space is not financially viable as space and utilities charges are an increasing burden that cannot be sustained. ​

Space Occupancy studies for both buildings were conducted, capturing the number of people occupying each space over a period of two weeks. ​

An audit of the Tri-radiate Medical Building was undertaken to inspect the spaces identified and collect information about what the spaces are being used for, and the extent to which the space supports the activity.​

​Baseline information was reported in order to generate productive conversation around potential future space savings and opportunities to improve space efficiency.​
